The Weekly Buzz – 23/07/2018

The unrelenting welsh dubstep and dnb collective LSN are back at it again, this time self releasing their brand new four track EP ‘Night Terrors’ via their Bandcamp.

It’s business as usual for much of the EP, but who can complain when LSN have nailed a perfect forthright industrial sound over the last few years. Take the EP’s opening track ‘XLR Jam‘ for example, a track that’s laced in ear rumbling sub bass sitting under a roaring mid range, that initially rips through sequentially until the track grows more aggressive as the distortion transforms into a wild beast, following the addition of dread filled apocalyptic drones for good measure. The following track ‘IV‘ follows on in a similar belligerent fashion.
Just when you think LSN has piled on the aggression enough, the EP’s title track ‘Night Terrors‘ steps it up a notch. After a minute or so of steady build up with a constant increase in volume and texture, ‘Night Terrors‘ explodes into beautiful industrial chaos, wild distorted guitar leads cut through the thumping kicks and ingenious vocal cuts. It sounds cliché but this is one is definitely not for the light hearted, or the neighbours.

The EP wraps up with…’Wraps‘ (pun kind of intended). For me this is the centre piece. Yes, LSN nail their dark chaotic industrial sound perfectly over the last three tracks but this inspired collaboration with Cimm is down right naughty. The two sides of the genre collide with LSN‘s brashness and Cimm‘s minimal structures and vibrant sounds bouncing off one another perfectly. It’s a collab I would have never expected but definitely one I won’t be forgetting in a hurry.

With the genre currently engulfed in trap infusions, hip hop and grime collisions and various experimentations (which I’m all for), it’s paved the way for LSN to stick to what they do best and take their industrial dungeon sound to the max, what ever the tempo. ‘Night Terrors‘ certainly encapsulates this with added flavour from that wicked collab.

‘Night Terrors’ EP is out now and available from the LSN Bandcamp.
