Major Oak are a trio of UK producers who over time have stuck to what they do best. Undeterred from the vast amount of sub genres that have opened up within Dubstep over the years, the lads still put out really solid 140 dubstep music in it’s purest form, which would have certainly caught a wheel or two back at DMZ. This week Major Oak puts out their latest body of work on Version Collective. A label that over the last year or so have successfully put out an EP each month from producers with sounds in all corners of the genre.
Major Oak‘s new five tracker opens up with ‘Filter Dub‘ which sets the precedent of what’s to come. Coming in with a definite old school vibe in it’s minimalism and focus on the subs, the track develops into something grittier as the deep stomping sub bass eventually evolves into a rougher cut. The EP journeys on in similar fashion with ‘Norte‘ and ‘Collymore‘ which features the most serious of bass lines. Following on from the EP’s title track ‘Secret Weapon‘, the EP concludes with ‘Medjay‘, a track that fully caught my attention and turns out to be my favourite of the five. Reminiscent of something Kryptic Minds would have come out with a few years ago, ‘Medjay‘ is the deepest track on the EP, full of atmosphere thanks to a palette of unique sounds previously unheard on the release. Where Major Oak brings the juicy dubby goodness for the majority of the EP, the trio really shows what they can pull off on this last memorable cut.
