If there is a producer that I can’t skip featuring any of their releases on Honey & Bass, it’s Mesck. The American producer has blessed my ears for many years now with ground breaking, system slaying productions on a multitude of prolific labels from Chestplate to Crucial Recordings. Consequently, for me, sitting firmly in my top five favourites. For his latest record he adds another high level label to his catalogue, Encrypted Audio, featuring on the twentieth edition of their vinyl exclusive side of the imprint.
As expected, Mesck brings two of his best and equally huge tunes to ENV020, ‘Locust March‘ and ‘Fugazi‘. Both of which are long time in demand tunes, destroying systems across the globe. The title ‘Locust March‘ works perfectly as the tracks description; the loud volatile lead of a chattering sample swarms the track. But the classic powerful Mesck drums fight back, with pounding 808’s and sharp snare rolls. A subtle addition of a riding cymbal escalates the frenzy. The eventual injection of cold synths heightens the tense, high pressure atmosphere, consumed by the plague.
The madness continues on the flip with ‘Fugazi,’ coming in just as chaotic, just as wild. Looping vocal edits cut through that gritty confronting mid range we’ve all come to know and love from Mesck. Instantly recognisable and always breath taking.
Nothing more can be said when it comes to Mesck‘s work as he’s one of those artists that literally lets the music do the talking. It’s like he extracts my brain and translates every neuron into music form. Each time becoming worryingly more accurate. And if you’re not familiar already, not only does he nail the music but his self designed artwork always hits the spot. I’ve stayed away from the vinyl recently for multiple reasons but this is a must cop.
ENV020 is out now and available on vinyl from the Encrypted Audio Bandcamp.
