Beginning life as a reliable platform for all things 140, from radio to events to a label, Strictly 140 delves into the world of acetate for the first time this week. The limited vinyl hosts two long awaited dubs that shines a light on raw authentic UK dubstep in 2019. And who better to appear on such a release than Manchester duo BFM, returning to the label since featuring on its last release (STRCT002) and Glume, who continues to dominate with his Strictly debut, teaming up with one half of BFM, JFO.
For the A-side of this maiden 12″, BFM shares a colossal dub that’s been destroying the systems throughout 2019 which remains ‘Untitled‘. Having already become one of my most played tunes this year, ‘Untitled‘ balances the authenticity of pure 140 dubstep as the pensive pressure of the sub-zero frequencies take precedence. However with that, it’s the distinct resonating string lead that opens the track up into a larger than life, melancholic production that’s impossible to forget. On the flip, JFO teams up with Glume who continues to smash it this year, both solo and as a notorious duo with Phossa. The pair come together for the first time to create ‘Dusk Riddim‘, another pure no-nonsense piece of 140 bass music that gives a nod to the golden age. Rooted in classic wubs and wobbles, spacious breaks and sharp minimal percussion, the pair recreate a similar melancholic vibe to its sister track; light wistful chords offset the deep wobbles, doused in reverb that stretch far and wide. Perfect for a moody, eyes down segment of the dance and for those looking for a dose of the old-school.
As an exclusive vinyl release that holds two of the most authentic UK originated dubs around, STRCTv001 has already sold out, instantly becoming one for the collectors. Expressing a vivid throwback to 2005 but with extra zest, STRCTv001 is both refreshing and nostalgic in equal measure. With word of a second vinyl exclusive around the corner, keep an eye out for Strictly 140 who will continue to grow into force to be reckoned with within the UK dubstep scene.
