Bristol’s favourite beat wizard Phossa unleashes his second sparkling EP of the year after his debut on Panel Audio in February. This week he appears on the mighty White Peach Records, a second appearance on the prolific label following the incredible ‘Buried‘ EP with Glume last year. Like many of Phossa‘s and White Peach‘s releases alike, ‘Touch‘ EP entails some of the most addictive, scintillating material within 140 today.
Painting a vivid image of those carefree sunny afternoons on the riverside banks of Bristol, the characteristically warm, easy listening sounds of ‘Touch‘ has long been due for a release. Phossa digs deep into his never ending inventory of dazzling synths, intertwining summery melodies with those refreshingly bright and dreamy vocal chops. We’re faced with similar sunny vibes on the succeeding ‘Lotus‘. Although here, Phossa guides us through the hustle and bustle of the sun drenched city centre. Wavy and atmospheric, he builds considerable energy with lively arpeggios to compliment the sweetly tuned vocal cuts and chime-like textures. With echoes of some of his outstanding collaborative work with Glume, Phossa takes us into the jazz lounge for ‘Untitled‘. There’s a brief change in direction with soft jazzy keys, before a seamless transition into the neighbouring arcade, where accents of modulated 8bit-esque melodies begin to emerge. As the night draws in, as our day in the city draws to a close, we make a short cut through the backstreets towards the train station during ‘Static‘, the moodiest of the four. Leaving no stone un-turned on this EP, Phossa exhibits the deepest, darkest lows on the record with yet another emotional, although this time sombre, signature lead.
I’ve waxed lyrical more than a few of times on this blog about Phossa‘s endless capabilities. While I discovered the producer some time ago through the iconic collaborations with Glume, he’s really come into his own as a solo producer as of late. ‘Touch‘ exhibits some of the smoothest, most radiant sounds you’ll enjoy this summer that, for the most part, will get you back into high spirits.
