Ghast – Mothership (OVDBLK001) [HNYBSS Premiere]

It’s time for our first premiere of the year and we’ve got an undeniably monstrous tune taken from Ghast‘s new EP ‘Mothership‘ on Belgian imprint Overdue. Ghast has hit the ground running this year as this follows a killer release on Encrypted Audio earlier this month (ENV024). ‘Mothership‘ EP features two original productions from the Denver based producer including today’s premiere ‘Mothership‘ and two massive remixes for each track courtesy of RDG and label heads Caba & Substrada, all of which are entirely deserving of a place on Overdue‘s first black-label release!

OVDBLK001 opens with the breakneck low end throbs and scratchy mid range riffs of ‘Vehement Mess‘ followed by RDG’s take, where the Danish producer reworks the original into an even fatter piece of full-bodied bass driven music with added bounce, clearly crafted with the dance floor in mind. On the flip, today’s premiere and title track ‘Mothership’ proves to be the darkest, filthiest track I’ve heard for a while; the low end is thick and all consuming, off set by the atmospheric vocal harmonies that sit perfectly in the otherwise harsh, industrial mix. Caba & Substrada pull no punches on their remix, stripping back much of the rough industrial textures. Instead the duo delves into unusual minimal patterns, whilst focusing on the pulsating sub frequencies with regular switches and forming some of the darkest areas on the 12″, even darker than the original itself.

Overdue have rightly outdone themselves for their maiden black label release, piecing together my favourite release to land on their catalogue so far. Through two releases just this month, Ghast has already proven why you should be keeping tabs on him throughout 2020.

OVDBLK001 is out this Friday (24th January) and available on vinyl and digitally from the Overdue Bandcamp.
