Following their latest vinyl instalment featuring the bona fide sounds of WZ last month, Locus Sound makes an immediate return this week by welcoming yet another debutant to the growing roster, Mistah. The Chicago based producer has assembled heat for a minute now and rightfully landed speaker-busting releases on the likes of Foundation Audio, Defy Culture and Duploc. But this latest EP on Locus Sound sees Mistah carve up the dancefloor once and for all with three body abducting tracks including today’s premiere, ‘Forward‘.
It’s quite a cinematic opening to LOCUS019, where Mistah spells out tension and anticipation through dazzling synths reverberating across a soundscape of deep bass tones, ominous and dramatic. But it’s a period of false security as ‘Forge‘ abruptly drops into the main body of the track; an all-consuming cheek-smacking bassline with more bounce than a space hopper. If the hypnotic cadence of ‘Forge‘ doesn’t seize your inhibitions, if you don’t find yourself popping your collar bone as your shoulders autonomously swing from side to side, then the following distorted bass flutters of ‘Because‘ should finish you off. Only this time, you’ll be throwing those shoulders and stomping those feet with a look of vexation on your face because this is the roughest and toughest roller to escape the mind of Mistah. The final filthy creation and today’s premiere ‘Forward‘, rounds off the trio with a killer blow of progressive bass textures. Less dizzying and disorientating than the previous two rollers, ‘Forward‘ is more of a heavy footed late night stomper for those that survive the palpitating chaos that came before.
With this debut on Locus Sound, Mistah has chosen the right time to master the art of moving an insatiable dancefloor through just three powerful tracks. He may have provided many bewildering bangers in the past with plenty of raw throwback moments, but ‘Forge‘ and ‘Because’ simply go harder into a befuddling dancefloor trip until ‘Forward‘ provides a powerful knockout punch.
