Sub Garden‘s admirable consistency continues this week with a Halloween treat and debut from Croydon’s Nightmare. As one half of Dubstep duo NMO, Nightmare announces himself as a solo producer to be reckoned with, unleashing two giant tracks of his own including today’s premiere, ‘The ID’. With this latest instalment, Sub Garden remains the perfect example of a platform dedicated to showcasing under-the-radar talent, to the point where I’ve lost count of the amount of music I’ve discovered courtesy of these guys and SGDN031 is yet another to add to the ever-growing collection!
Throughout the two tracks, it becomes apparent that Nightmare isn’t messing about when it comes to forging chest rattling bass lines. Today’s premiere ‘The ID‘ stirs up a constant wave of advancing bass weight pressure, aggressively moving through thick, intimidating surroundings. Soft and enigmatic vocal-like swells offset violent mid-range rips, before Nightmare adds a sprinkling of rapid vocal jabs, bringing ‘The ID‘ briefly to the dancefloor. ‘Throwing Hands’ happens to be just as bone crushing as it’s predecessor, though relying on a wider range of creative elements, from the leading chopped and screwed vocal cuts, to the dread inducing high frequency tones. Nightmare proves his flexibility, moving from the heavyweight stomps of the previous track to more complex percussive patterns and unrelenting progression, growing in grit and volatility moving forward.
Like the majority of Sub Garden’s back-catalogue, SGDN031 sees label heads Roklem & Sebalo flex their taste making capabilities once again and cast a spotlight onto the growing bass-driven force that is Nightmare, another fresh name to keep our eyes and ears out for.
SGDN031 is out this Saturday (31st October) and available to download from the Sub Garden Bandcamp.
