Nova – Single Fuse (IFS027) [HNYBSS Premiere]

After a successful launch of their digital exclusive series last month, Infernal Sounds head back to their roots for the next instalment with another impeccable vinyl release on both the music front and the visual. Nova provides the cutting edge material this time, debuting on the label with what could be considered his most accomplished record so far in his young career. ‘Bonfide‘ EP features four tracks of Nova‘s fresh flavours with old school sensibilities, including a killer collaboration with Foamplate. However today I have the pleasure of premiering my favourite of the four, the hyperactive ‘Single Fuse’.

The opening ‘Bonafide‘ rolls in with more wonk than a boxers nose. A proper Willy Wonka of tune with sour-face capabilities and explicit influences of that ‘bona-fide’ originative sound. But stepping from those tough, teeth grinding bassline tones is today’s premiere, ‘Single Fuse‘, hitting higher levels on the energy-ometer. An electric amalgamation of wacky, cartoonish sampling and sparkling FX as Nova‘s character shines through. The percussion is also just as lively, rolling fast and loose yet completely under control upon those heavy bassline switches. With a flip of the record, the b-side opener ‘Fives‘ tests Nova‘s fundamentals. A stripped back dark-room burner with only the thick, whirring low end and the sharp, organic smacks of the percussion required. Which leaves us with a powerful collaboration featuring Foamplate to finish the record in brain-busting fashion. The two 140 warriors combine like the Power Rangers on ‘Intricacy‘, mighty morphing into a dizzying combination of rapid fire low end flutters and unusual quivering mid-range effects for a final otherworldly experience.

Nova has been sitting on the radars of many for a while now, even if the rumours are true and the anonymous producer is sickeningly young. Already his second vinyl release of the year following ‘Glisten‘ EP on Romulus Records (RMLS003), it seems Nova‘s charismatic sound is breaking through into the ‘must cop’ territories, especially when matched with such wicked sleeve artwork by Leftanderson. Something that Infernal Sounds always manages to achieve; the perfect audio and visual combo.

IFS027 is out 01/04/2021 and available on vinyl from the Infernal Sound store.
