Premiere: Mitaka – Headspace (SD019)

Never one to shy away from a bit of variety, the latest H&B premiere brings forward the colourful, wavy sounds of little known producer Mitaka. His latest beat-tape-esque release on UK label Simply Deep features a collection of lively, varied productions ranging from sample heavy, DIY style lo-fi, to the larger vibrant trap-influenced productions. For today’s premiere, we bring the wavy sounds of ‘Headspace‘.

Beginning this raw eight track mix-tape, Mitaka eases in with a pair of lo-fi hip hop flavoured tracks ‘Swinging‘ and the aptly named ‘Daydreams‘ with a slow, laid back jazzy composition, sparking nostalgia for the hazy summer days that now seem so long ago. ‘Astral’ and our latest premiere ‘Headspace‘ liven things up as Mitaka heads into the contemporary areas of easy-going, vivid trap music. Both tracks are rooted in smooth 808’s, classic crisp hats that skip over Mitaka‘s precisely placed chimes, delivering breezy atmospheres alongside dazzling swells and pads. ‘Delphino’ cools things down a little with another portion on minimal lo-fi magic before heading to the club with the sunny, dance friendly vibes of ‘Purple Thang‘ and ‘Riding Clean‘. The tape concludes with the fittingly bright, bubbly sounds of ‘Lifestream‘ that epitomises Mitaka‘s effortless, wavy style expressed throughout the tape.

Astral‘ is a refreshing take on the old-school unpolished format of a beat-tape, something I’d like to see and hear more often. As a fairly unknown name on the come-up, Mitaka utilises the format comprehensively, enabling him to express himself freely and demonstrate his potential with complete clarity. Respect goes to Simply Deep also, for putting out something different in terms of genre and format. More of this please!

‘SD019’ is out 30/09/2019.
