As one of the breakthroughs of 2019, it’s a pleasure to be premiering one of Pharma‘s tracks from his brand new self released EP ‘Selekta‘. Being a producer that’s found success this year, landing on labels like Locus Sound and Instigate Recordings, it initially came as a shock to see a self released EP put out in such an independent fashion and on such short notice. But fear not, as the record contains four of the Austrian’s finest productions and even stacks up with some of my favourite records of this year.
Opening with today’s premiere and title track ‘Selekta’, the EP explores the murky, mystical underbelly of contemporary dubstep, a sound that Pharma constructs so well. From the unusual jarring patterns of ‘Selekta‘ to the light eerie tones that feature throughout, Pharma creates a sullen yet captivating dimension. That’s until the bonus track ‘Cutting Grass‘ takes the EP into a lively climax, mixing it up with larger, expansive synth sections and a quicker, more persistent melody to follow its rumbling lows that go even deeper than the heavy 808 kicks that become a feature throughout the previous tracks.
Don’t be fooled by the independent nature of this EP, this is by no means a collection of beats that Pharma has found to light-heartedly throw together and put out himself. These are four carefully crafted productions that flow perfectly with one another and at a level of quality that matches any release to feature on a high-profile label this year. And that includes the superb artwork courtesy of Lauzer aka Mob Killa.
‘Selekta’ EP is out on November 1st and available to pre-order on Pharma’s Bandcamp now.
