Fresh from last month’s flawless compilation ‘The Overseas‘, Strictly 140 returns with more high grade paraphernalia this week in the form of Sativa‘s 420 special, ‘Homegrown‘ EP. Regularly producing as one half of dubstep duo BFM, Sativa returns to the label with this, his debut digital release, featuring four of his own super strained blends of dubstep and grime. Today’s premiere is the ice cold ‘4C‘, the record’s concluding track and one that ends ‘Homegrown‘ on a definitive ‘high’.
The EP’s grimiest joint ‘Champion‘ lights up the record with harsh, menacing synth work and powerful horns in classic grime fashion. Sativa teases with frequent low end throbs before he really lets the sub-bass fly for the EP’s title track ‘Homegrown‘. Stacked with consistent low frequency rumbles, with any excess elements stripped back to focus on the meticulous cut throat percs, this is the one track on the record destined to satisfy the appetite of any dubstep purist!
Sativa delivers more grimy wizardry on ‘Dengle‘. A spacious cut with frosty textures and more electrifying horns, plus a cool little guitar-like riff settled underneath. Today’s premiere ‘4C’ concludes the record as the most powerful strain. A track where Sativa‘s dubstep and grime fully synthesize. Dark and smokey with an ice cold lead and dominant 808s, it’s a satisfying way to finish the session.
